About The  Edge

The EDGE is a Catholic middle school youth ministry experience created for early adolescents in grades seven and eight. The EDGE is designed to meet the educational, spiritual, emotional, and social needs of young adolescents. Kids should be encouraged to bring their friends to The EDGE.

At this age middle school youth are open to good and bad behaviors as well as positive and negative ideas. Many of the values and beliefs they held as children are now questioned and challenged. As young adolescents they are trying to figure out who they are and what they believe.

In many respects middle school kids are on the edge because so much is going on in their lives physically, mentally, spiritually, and socially. It can be a very stressful and difficult time for them and their parents. As a Catholic Community, we have the opportunity to give our middle school youth The EDGE they need in life: Jesus, The Word, The Eucharist, and the Church!

With in the context of faith, middle school youngsters are moving from a child-like spirituality to one that will hopefully reach its pinnacle, through the work of The EDGE, into an adult faith commitment to Jesus Christ and the Catholic Church.

The EDGE Overview
Possible components to The EDGE

A. A Sunday youth liturgy is a powerful tool geared to youth. Contemporary liturgical music, homilies geared toward young people, videos, drama, and skits that bring the gospel message of Jesus home to middle school youth, high school teens and young adults are a part of a Sunday night youth liturgy.
B. EDGE night occurs most weeks during the school year except when school is not in session during a particular week. The EDGE also has social and recreational activities designed to create a greater sense of community among our middle school youth and for the kids to have fun and enjoy themselves in a church setting.
C. A three-day retreat and The EDGE periodically meets during the summer.
D. The EDGE offers middle school youth different occasions to put their faith into action through a variety of service projects.
E. The parent’s component is designed to assist parents in raising their middle school youngster. Educational classes and sessions on middle school spirituality, psychology, personality development, and physical development are offered.

Goals of The EDGE

1. To foster a transforming spiritual experience of Jesus through the liturgy, which will allow early adolescents to experience the Word of God and the Eucharist in a deeper and more profound way.
2. To create a positive experience of the Catholic Church for early adolescents.
3. To assist middle school youngsters in gaining an understanding and appreciation of what the Catholic Church teaches and believes.
4. To incorporate the Catholic Church’s vision of social justice and peace into the spiritual life of pre-adolescents.
5. To develop an identity in middle school youth and in the EDGE ministry as being a vital and visual presence within the parish community.

The EDGE will meet on most Wednesday evenings through the school year from 7:00-8:30 pm at the Activity Center. Youth are encourage to come early, at 6:30pm, for Social Time.
